I use a wide range of approaches when working with clients:

Integrative Psychotherapy

As I am trained in several types of therapy I can tailor my approach to you. I like to use an integrative approach because it embraces the value of each individual as unique by combining different forms of psychotherapy to create one approach to therapy which responds appropriately and effectively to all aspects of you.

This approach enables me to assess your difficulties and challenges and, with you, develop an understanding of the change you hope to achieve using the approaches best suited to you.

If you experience difficulty in communicating verbally, I can help you find creative means through which to express your emotions. My integrative approach endeavours to keep our therapeutic relationship at the centre of my practice, as I believe this to be the core to all successful therapeutic work.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy involves us working collaboratively. This therapy aims to help you understand the relationship between your thoughts, behaviours and feelings.

Once we have worked together to reach a full understanding of the problem, we then agree on tasks which you may experiment with in order to identify the techniques that work most effectively for you.

Possible tasks include writing thought diaries, confronting and modifying negative thoughts and experimenting with different behaviours.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic Therapy offers you a regular time to talk about yourself, as well as your past and present relationships, focusing on the influence that unconscious processes have on your present behaviour.

The goal of psychodynamic therapy is to improve your self-awareness, enabling you to gain insight into the influence of your past on your present behaviour. This can help to show you how some of the things that you feel, do and say are not driven by your conscious thoughts and feelings but by unconscious feelings from your past.

When you understand these connections better, you can make decisions based on what you want or need now, not what your past experiences drive you to do.

I teach clients mindfulness as a way of becoming more aware of the present moment, including getting in touch with moment-to-moment changes in their mind and their bodies.

It can help clients to learn to notice certain habits of mind which are present in anxiety and depression and to develop a new relationship to them.

Mindfulness can help people to halt the escalation of negative thoughts and teach them to focus on the present moment, rather than reliving the past or pre-living the future.

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)

When we have been involved in or witness a very distressing event our brain can struggle to process information in the way it would process an everyday event.

This can lead to a number of difficulties such as re-experiencing the event as though it were happening now, memories that are so overwhelming you avoid thinking of them or a state where you feel constantly on the lookout for danger.

The alternating right and left brain simulation (or bi-lateral stimulation) which happens during EMDR treatment seems to stimulate the blocked information processing system.

EMDR seems to enable people to start to relate differently to their memories, to be able to talk and think about them when they want to in a more coherent way and experience far less distress when doing so.

Katherine Poole (C.Psychol)

I completed my Undergraduate Honours Degree in Psychology at Leeds University, followed by Postgraduate Diplomas in Counselling Psychology and the Practice of Counselling Psychology as well as a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology at Roehampton University, London. I have worked in both private practice and the NHS. My private practice has been running since 2006.

If we decide to start working together I will keep our therapeutic relationship at the centre of my practice. I will work with you to empower you to make changes in your life and, where relevant, to make decisions about the process of your therapy. I offer a safe non-judgemental space where you can gain more understanding and self-awareness, enabling you to find better ways to cope, manage difficulties and make healthier choices.

Chartered Counselling Psychologists are professional applied psychologists concerned with the integration of psychological theory and research with therapeutic practice. The practice of counselling psychology requires a high level of self-awareness and competence in relating the skills and knowledge of personal and interpersonal dynamics to the therapeutic context.

As Counselling Psychologists we use a holistic stance, which involves examining the issues presented by you, within the wider context of what has given rise to them. I will work collaboratively with you to explore underlying issues, help you gain personal insight and empower you to consider change.
